Sport for all I don’t think so!
I am somewhat confused! Not difficult some of you who know me may say but I have read and re-read the notice of motion put forward by the Liberal Democrats for tomorrow night’s Council Meeting entitled ‘Olympics’. It reads ‘this Council resolves to use this country’s upcoming decade of sport to promote sport and physical wellbeing across the borough’. Perhaps this should also state ‘as long as it is not in Heaton Park’. I am not saying that I agree with the use of Heaton Park as a private sports facility and agree that sports should be encouraged and in fact I am delighted that Whitefield LAP in the past few months have given out grants to two football teams to help them develop their facilities. But I am still confused?

I haven’t read the motion Michelle (do you know where I can find it?), but I don’t think you should be confused. In fact, I don’t think you are confused, I think you’re being mischievous.
The Lib Dems opposition to the proposed development in Heaton Park isn’t against the sports facilities, but the location of them. I agree with their objections to be honest. I am all for soccer centres (and use several, now and again), but not in the middle of parks.
“Physical wellbeing” includes walking and enjoying open space, both of which will be made harder by plonking an acre of concrete on the green fields of Heaton Park.
I suspect the Lib Dems will thank you for giving publicity to a motion at Council. It’s the first time I’ve ever read about one in my life.
